Illinois Constitutional Convention a Possibility?
It seems that the electorate is so unhappy with the Democrats in Illinois government that a Constitutional Convention, in which a recall provision can be inserted, is becoming a possibility. Every 20 years there is a referendum on the subject and 2008 is the next year that it will be on the ballot. Will the people of Illinois vote to rewrite the state's constitution in order to dispense of this disaster of a governor? We'll see.My personal view is that we have an opportunity to remove any elected official from office every time their term is up and an election is held. The problem is that the State of Illinois is so full of government dependent, non-thinking, partisan Democrats that the situation almost seems hopeless. How else do you explain the three largest offices in the state going to Chicago Democrats.
From the article:
Every 20 years, Illinois voters are asked if they want to convene a state Constitutional Convention. The last time this question was on the ballot, in 1988, more than half of all voters didn't even bother to pick a side.Read more via the Chicago Sun-times
But Gov. Blagojevich is so incredibly unpopular with voters right now, as well as Cook County Board President Todd Stroger and the whole system in general, that if something doesn't change soon I think we could see the voters using next year's "Con-Con" vote as a referendum on our seemingly broken government.
A poll taken this month by the Glengariff Group shows that a whopping 65 percent of Illinois voters want to add the ability to recall elected officials to the state's Constitution. A majority, 52 percent, would recall Blagojevich if given the chance. The environment is clearly ripe for a revolt. Blagojevich and Stroger won't be on the ballot next year, so the only way voters can really get at them while not voting GOP is through the convention question.
